Article: Realism is self-honesty

We’ve all heard of SMART goals, but the discipline of project management wouldn’t exist if we all found it easy to not only set the right goals, but also to achieve them on time, within budget and without ‘issues’.

Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely.  Of all of them, it is usually the lack of Realism that is the reason behind a failed project. We get carried away with enthusiasm, buoyed up by too much hope and too little honesty.

We don’t do it deliberately, but we just can’t see the bigger picture because we are only looking at it from one direction. So how could we get a different perspective, a non-judgemental, impartial outlook that allows us to see the wood from the trees and be honest enough with ourselves to identify the right choices and make the tough decisions?

A business coach can help us to gain clarity over the whole project, help us to focus on the immediate tasks in hand, assist us in analysing where our strengths lie so that we can allocate resources effectively and efficiently.

A business coach can advise us, keep us motivated when the going gets tough, hold us accountable for taking the actions we committed to and help us communicate effectively when things get delayed, so that the implications can be managed and the overall impact minimised.

Perhaps true Realism comes from self-knowledge and having the courage to ask for help when we feel we need it most?
